Description
Madonnina Or Madonna of the Streets. I found this picture, actually a small card, sent to my uncle many years ago. He passed away several years ago and I often wondered what this picture meant to him. I fell in love with it immediately and vowed someday to paint in pastel my own impression. The artist Roberto Ferrizzi painted it in oil. Was b.1854, d.1934. Circa 1894-7. The story goes, the models for this painting were Angelina Cian (age 11) and her younger brother. Although not originally painted as a religious picture this painting became popularized as an image of the Virgin Mary holding her infant son. (It has held a special place in my heart.) Painted on suede board. FEATURED in "Weekly Fun for All," 9/16/13, "Pastel Passion," 9/17/13 and "Old Masters and Paintings," 9/22/13. Have spent approx. 32 hours, only need to finish babys dress and a little touch up around Mary's hood. Its really minor, yet can't seem to apply the finishing touches. Thank you Pittsburg, Pa. For your purchase.

A great painting is never finished Antonia -- Degas collectors would quip that when he visited to make sure your Degas was chained to the wall because he kept trying to make changes, even after the painting was sold! Your Madonna is first rate! L/F

Antonia ,you have captured a beautiful light and tenderness with this lovely pastel painting. It certainly does look like a religious painting at first glance,so it is very interesting that wasn't the original intention. I notice you used "suede board" and imagine that contributed to the lovely soft velvety texture and richness. Wonderful work! v/f
